Seeing fresh

We do a lot of looking: we look through lenses, telescopes, television tubes… Our looking is perfected every day—but we see less and less.
Never has it been more urgent to speak of seeing. Ever more gadgets, from cameras to computers, from art books to videotapes, conspire to take over our thinking, our feeling, our experiencing, our seeing. Onlookers we are, spectators… ‘Subjects’ we are that look at ‘objects.’ Quickly we stick labels on all that is, labels that stick once—and for all. By these labels we recognize everything but no longer see anything. We know the labels on all the bottles, but never taste the wine. (Frederick Franck, Zen of Seeing: Seeing/Drawing as Meditation)
At Dharma/Arte we’re exploring in 2011 the potentials of seeing. Join us for the next D/A Online Encounter, an introduction to contemplative photography with Andy Karr — writer, photographer, and Buddhist teacher; co-author of The Practice of Contemplative Photography: Seeing the World with Fresh Eyes (Shambhala Publications, 2011) and author of Contemplating Reality (Shambhala Publications, 2007).
This talk and discussion will be an introduction to contemplative photography, an approach to taking photographs that reveals our natural creativity and shows us how to see, and photograph, the extraordinary in the ordinary.
