Dharma/Arte is a Brazilian non-profit organization dedicated to exploring the intersection between dharma, art, creativity and transformative experiences. Dharma/Arte is inspired by dharma art teachings as presented by the Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, yet these teachings are a jumping off point for investigations that cover a range of different approaches and ideas. Dharma/Arte has a Buddhist name, yet it promotes a “no limits” vision: our bottom line is openness. This is our compost, from which we seek to grow many beautiful flowers.

Dharma/Arte is based in Brazil, yet it is an international community that communicates through old and new forms of technology. Indeed, how to communicate deeply and sincerely across and beyond national, idealistic, spatial and temporal boundaries is one set of investigations to which we are dedicated.

Dharma/Arte is an experiment in how the worlds of art and creativity can cross over into, and successfully intersect with, social movements. Dharma/Arte also seeks to explore and transgress the delineations between the artistic and business communities. We thus seek to communicate and work collaboratively with a great variety of people across many disciplines, in search of new visions, new art forms, new artistic content, new social alternatives, new forms of doing business, new ways of interacting as human beings, new methods of exchange.

At present Dharma/Arte works with other entities, including but not limited to artistic, educative and social institutions, book publishers, event promoters, and companies concerned with social responsibility. But this is merely a partial list, a list that is limited only by our imaginations.

Among the end products Dharma/Arte provides are:
_ books from varied cultures and origins that speak with this approach;
_ contemporary art shows and exhibitions related to this vision;
_ art and education events aimed at several social segments;
_ training events with interdisciplinary, intercultural, inter-religious and non-religious dialogue;
_ leadership training events exploring creative and decision-making processes, aimed at young people, companies and other social agents.

Dharma/Arte’s first public activities happened in November 2008, when Meredith Monk and her Vocal Ensemble visited Brazil for a series of performances, workshops and talk (see photos here and here). Dharma/Arte is now working on its projects for 2012. If you want to get involved or to become a partner, please email redes@dharma.art.br.  If you are inspired to support us, click here.
